Design & Technology
The principal aim of the DT curriculum at Wheelers Lane Primary is to develop children's knowledge, skills and understanding in design and technology. Teachers ensure that the children apply their knowledge and understanding when developing ideas, planning, making products, and then evaluating them.
Year 1, Year 3 and Year 5 will cover 3 units of DT. Years 2, 4, and 6 will cover 2 units over the year. Each term, one unit should be taught in Years 1, 3 and 5. Years 2,4 and 6 have more flexibility.
Each class will have a large portfolio which will be presented in a class 'floor' book. Each page in the floor book will showcase work that has been completed in the lesson showing the skills that children have been taught and how they have applied these skills independently when making their final products; this may be photos, design drawings, evaluations or any other aspects of the project that has been covered. In addition, any photos will be stored in the DT folder (online). The purpose of this is that the teacher that next teaches the same aspect will be able to show these to the children hence building their memory of what they made in the subject of DT .
It is very important that children are told that they are learning DT and what DT is. We need to raise the profile of DT within the school. Measurement of DT skills will be evident in the products that they have made, the designs they have drawn and the feedback from the children.
