Welcome to Year 1. In Year 1 this year, the class teachers will be Mrs Pearson (1P), Mr Palethorpe (1JP) and Miss Wallace (1W) and we will also be supported by our wonderful teaching assistants.

We are really excited about our learning this year. In Year 1 we read many great texts including The Night Pirates, The Tiger Who Came to Tea and Hip Hop to the MiniBeast Bop. As teachers, we look forward to sharing many more super books with you each week. Imagine how many books we will read in a term, let alone a year! Mr Palethorpe is looking forward to exploring our history of toys and a chance to learn all about explorers as well as our local history in Birmingham. Mrs Pearson is looking forward to taking our learning beyond the classroom whilst looking after the school environment. Miss Wallace is looking forward to helping us produce some truly amazing pieces of art when we explore printing, modelling and painting.

To help us become readers, we will follow the Little Wandle Revised Letters and Sounds to develop both our phonics skills. This builds on all of the phonics learning delivered in our EYFS. In addition, we have dedicated reading time each day to help us develop our fluency, expression and comprehension skills as well as opportunities to read for pleasure.

As mathematicians, we will continue to learn using manipulatives to truly embed our understanding and to help us grasp newly taught concepts. Each half term, we focus on a new set of mathematical facts, which we will endeavour to learn off by heart. This learning will prove invaluable as we progress through the school and will provide the foundations for our future in learning in this subject.
In Year 1, we enjoy learning about the different areas the curriculum is divided into. We are lucky enough in Year 1 to have weekly sessions with a visiting teacher from the Artis Foundation. The teacher works with us to explore various areas of the curriculum through drama, music and movement building our confidence in these areas We get the chance to put these skills in practice during our Key Stage Christmas performance and our class assembly.
Throughout the year, we will take part in many special events, such as themed weeks and our exciting annual whole school Vision Day. This is, of course, just a fraction of the work we will do together. We cannot wait to share this learning journey with all Year 1 children and much, much more.
