Science

Science teaching at Wheelers Lane provides children with a strong understanding of the world around them and promotes a sense of awe and wonder in natural phenomena through an enriched spiral curriculum. We foster a lifelong love and interest in Science, starting the children on their journey of exploration and discovery into the wonderful world we live in. We encourage a thirst for exploring and asking questions. This is supported by our teaching of the key knowledge and concepts and scientific enquiry skills. With a desire to increase children’s Science Capital, we promote the STEM industries and the diverse career opportunities available to all our children.
At Wheelers Lane, in order to provide a high quality Science curriculum, we:
Ensure that Science is taught discreetly for at least 1 hour per week but is also taught where appropriate through other areas of the curriculum.
Carefully structure lessons to ensure progression and depth.
Aim to provide additional enrichment activities to increase children's Science Capital.
Ensure each classroom will have a Science working wall so all children develop a wide scientific vocabulary bank.

A Science lesson at Wheelers Lane:

Will begin by referring back to the previous lesson, term and year. Children will know if the lesson is physics, biology or chemistry based (KS2) and this will be shared/displayed alongside the learning objective. Children will engage in a variety of activities including: research; investigations; watching video clips and interactive resources, debates and data collection. Children will record in various ways including: tables; explanations, videos and annotated drawings. In investigations, children will assume given roles to ensure active engagement. Teachers will provide instant feedback in the lesson to inform next steps for children and for assessment.
