Welcome to Year 2

Year 2

Year 2 News

Welcome to Year 2! In Year 2 this year, the class teachers will be Mrs Stone, Mr Palethorpe and Miss Hobbs and will be supported by our wonderful teaching assistants.

We are going to spend the year becoming masters of Maths as we follow the Mastery program to think deeper about how numbers have relationships in order to add, subtract, multiply and divide. We will look at telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes and explore the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. When writing for different purposes in English lessons, we will look closely at choosing words to create an effect and add plenty of detail through interesting adjectives, verbs and conjunctions. While reading a range of books, children will develop their prosody by thinking about how words and phrases can be said with feeling and expression. We will use interesting texts to develop skills of retrieval and inference by finding clues to answer challenging questions.

We are really excited about our learning this year. In Year 2, children will have the opportunity to read, amongst other high quality books, one of Miss Hobbs’s personal favourites, The Day the Crayons Quit. Mrs Stone is particularly looking forward to exploring the topic of Kings Heath Now and Then during our history lessons and Mr Palethorpe can’t wait to get stuck into the Wheels and Axles project as part of our DT this year. In addition to this, we will explore compass directions, develop skills using an atlas, learn to sew to create a product and use multimedia to create an impression of the Great Fire on London.

In year 2, we will also explore compass directions, develop skills using an atlas, learn to sew to create a product in DT and use oil pastels to create an impression of the Great Fire on London. We will even build a wormery and look after some wriggly class pets!

On top of all this, children in Year 2 will throughout the year experience our themed weeks and get to take part in our ever popular vision day as well as the opportunity to be involved in our class assembly, focusing on celebrations and mental health. We also take a fascinating walk through Kings Heath to look at the buildings and features from the past which are still in use today.

We cannot wait to go on this learning journey with all the Year 2 children to experience all of this and much more.
